Since then Denkai has been doing just that at a facility in Grover, Colorado. When the Grover facility was purchased, Denkai was able to successfully raise a down payment and work with the seller to carry the note for them, however, it has been four years and this note balloons in May of 2013. Denkai needs a total of $383,000 to continue with its mission to save animals in need and helping youth in crisis. This is where they really need our help….any size donation would be greatly appreciated. Daisy Paw has donated and if you are able to, as well, it will truly go towards a good cause. Please click here for more information about the Capital Campaign and/or to donate.

Along with their Sanctuary in Grover, CO, Denkai has recently opened a Veterinary Clinic in Eaton, CO. This clinic provided exceptional subsidized veterinary care for low income pets and their families. However, that is exactly what happened on that cold dark day back on July 29, 2008. Actually, the day was neither cold nor dark, but that is what it felt like when I got the news. Talk about four spoken words that make you feel like you were just sucker punched in the gut, let me tell you, these are the words that will do it. Once hearing something like this you have two choices you can either have cancer and fight it or let it have you. I obviously choice to fight, as most people do and the way my life has transformed over these past four years is quite remarkable.

How cancer transformed my life will be left for another time though because I want to talk about who knew I had cancer, but couldn’t convey it in words. It was my beautiful soul mate of a dog Daisy, a Shepherd mix that captured my heart deeper then any other canine when we adopted her back in 2002 from a rescue. See, when I would go to hug Daisy on the side I had the tumor she would frantically pull away. This was a big message that I confused with her discomfort from a condition she has called Discoid Lupus (a chronic inflammatory condition effecting the skin). Many times this condition would make her pretty uncomfortable and she wouldn’t like to be touched at all. It wasn’t until I actually received the confirming diagnosis of cancer from my doctor that I would realize it wasn’t her condition, it was mine, that was making her so uncomfortable. Luckily, her odd behavior happened around the time I was due for my yearly mammogram, because I don’t know if I would have ever correlated her actions with something going on with me. It was from this mammogram they found a suspicious spot that would turn out to be cancer.

After receiving the confirming diagnosis of breast cancer I had a bit of time before my surgery. The surgeon and oncologist wanted to do some extensive test to know exactly what they were dealing with (ie., checking for BRACA1 & BRACA2, more ultrasounds, MRI of the breasts, needle guided biopsy, check if I was HER2 positive, blah, blah, blah) so they could plan their best course of attack of this cancer beast. Talk about feeling like a pincushion and being bombarded with words and information that you can’t even pronounce let alone comprehend, yikes! I do feel fortunate for this time I was given though, because it gave me the opportunity to witness the power of a canines nose first hand.

It was probably a few days after my diagnosis when I realized that Daisy knew something was going on inside me. I was feeling a bit blue that day so I got down on my knees to give Daisy a big hug. Her head was nuzzled in on the breast that had the tumor when all of a sudden she whipped her head back and started pulling away. It was at that instance when this notion popped into my head “does she know that I have cancer on this side?” so I thought I would test this notion. I went in to hug her again only this time I purposely nuzzled her head in close over the opposite breast and sure enough no resistance what so ever! This revelation went off like fireworks in my brain and all I could think was “Holy cow, you knew I have cancer all along!”. Now, some would say “oh, maybe that was just a coincident and you just think that is what she was trying to tell you” and I probably wouldn’t have argued their point if she didn’t do this continuously until the day I went in for surgery.

A few days after my surgery, which consisted of a partial mastectomy with reconstruction, it was time for me to go home. I couldn’t wait to get home to the comfort of my family, both two and four legged. On the day that I came home full of residual anesthesia and all kinds of other drugs swimming around in my body, I went to give my precious Daisy a hug and guess what.....she didn’t pull away. It was at that time I told my husband “I know they got all the cancer, because Daisy didn’t pull away”. To both of our astonishment (well, more my husband then me) was at my follow-up oncology appointment where the first words out of the oncologists mouth was “the good news is we removed all the cancer and since you choose to have a partial mastectomy you will not have to do chemo therapy”. Wow, if I wasn’t so sore from my surgery I would have been jumping for joy all around the examining room after hearing that. When my husband and I returned to the car to go home after my appointment, I turned to him and said “See...I told you Daisy knew it was gone!”.

Not that I every want to endure breast cancer….I mean really, who would! However, I am truly grateful for what I learned from this experience and appreciate that because of it I get to spend all my work and play days with Daisy and the rest of our pack. While I continue to be monitored (yes, by Daisy too) and have had to do various treatments over these past four years, I am cancer free. This whole ordeal has given me a second chance to really live my life to the fullest and am happily doing just that…with Daisy...on this other side of breast cancer!

Picture taken in Grand Tetons National Park October 2012:
Wendy England, 4+ year breast cancer thriver and founder of Daisy Paw.
Daisy, Soul mate, Savior, and Top Dog at Daisy Paw.

Some great Breast Cancer Awareness Reminders from Daisy:

Early detection of breast cancer is key to the best chance for survival.

Check your breast monthly, get a yearly breast exam from your health care professional, and have recommended mammograms, as needed.

Pay attention to what your dog is trying to tell you. Now she added making homemade healthy snacks...just for us though, not to sell.

See mom loves giving us treats, but thinks biscuits are boring and wanted to jazz up our snacks. Wow, once she got this idea in her head the next thing I knew she sat me down and said “Daisy, I’m going to start making fun, healthy, and yummy treats for you guys and you will be the CTO.” The CTO? What the heck is that? I’ve heard her mention that word when she worked in corporate america, but I didn’t think it sounded like anything good. I was a little concerned about what she was getting me into, but then she explained “you will be my official Chief Tasting Officer!” Oh, I see what she was doing here, she was trying to interject some corporate humor into this new venture. Hahaha, I don’t know half the stuff she talks about most of the time, but if it’s related to food, being with her, and having fun then I will be the CTO or whatever she wants to call me.

I am really glad she started this gig, being the CTO if super easy and fun! This is what my job entails; mom does all the work, I sit and watch her put my favorite stuff together, and when it’s done she has me taste it to see if I approve. She even lets me lick the spoon. Pretty cool job, huh?

Oh, and I’m a nice CTO too.....I let my siblings share in my job. If you do this make sure you use human edible dog treats if you want to share with your human friends.

This is an awesome cool treat...great for hot days like we have been experiencing lately.

Oh, and Mom wanted me to tell you these are good for us too. The jubilation continues with two of them, but one (not naming any names, Daisy) stops the wonderful welcome, heads into the other room, sits in the corner, and won’t look at you. This isn’t an anomaly either, it is how she reacts every time I have to leave them for a while. I am the only one that experiences the rejection that typically continues for about 24 hours. Included in this distaste for mom is grumbling, will not look at me, and won’t sleep on the floor next to my side of the bed...oh lucky me. When I leave she will lay by the door that I left through just moping for a day or two and every night will sleep in our bed, but only on my side.

My theory, and this is just my theory, is because our bond is so tight (tighter then any animal I have ever known) when I leave she feels a confusing loss with no closure to why I’m gone. When I return it is her way of saying “You left me, I thought you were gone forever, now don’t do this to me again”! I know I may be putting the human element into this, and dog behaviorists/theorists will most likely disagree because it doesn’t fit the pack rational or the thought process of a dog, but this is my theory and I am sticking to it. If you think about though, it really does fall in line with the understanding of dogs with a deep bond. For instance; when you own two dogs, they are inseparable, and it is time for one of them to cross the rainbow bridge. It is suggested that you have your dog see the other when they have passed so that there is closure and an understanding that they are not coming back. The reasoning behind this is that by taking the ailing dog away and not letting the remaining dog see the other when they pass there is no closure, the dog is confused, and expecting that the other will come back to them. Moving on for this dog is said to be much harder.

Regardless of the studied behaviors, theories, rationals, etc...the one thing I know for sure is that the dance that Daisy and I go through every time I have to be away will continue. In a way it warms my heart that she grips, grumbles, and let’s me know her displeasure of my absents. It just solidifies in my mind how truly connected we are!

Daisy thinks her Doggie Yoga Poses will be the Latest Craze among the Canine Communitiy!

Well, as you can see Daisy hasn’t done much blogging!

That is because she has been too busy creating “dog friendly” yoga poses. You see, no one really expected Isis to survive to 3 months, let alone 3 years! Yes, you heard that right, she really wasn’t expected to live.

It all started when we took our itty bitty kitty, Isis, to her 8 week kitty well check. We were expecting to hear our veterinarian say “Oh, what a cute kitty, she looks amazing and healthy, congratulations.” What we got was “hmm, something really doesn’t sound right with her heart, let’s get an EKG and an ultra sound to see what we are dealing with”. This was not the “Well Kitty Check” we were going for, but sometimes life throws you curves and you just have to deal with it, right. It was probably a week later when we met with the heart specialist. I remember standing in the examining room watching the whole procedure and trying to make sense of what I was seeing on the screen when all of a sudden the Cardiologist said “Isis, has an Aortic Stenosis and a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (wow, that is a mouth full...many veterinarians call it a PDA to help people like me who are verbally challenged)”. It was a quite scary diagnosis and as bad as everything looked there was not much optimism that she would live. It was decided by the Cardiologist, my vet, and myself that we would not attempt the risky surgery, place her on some Lasix (a water pill to remove fluid retention), and let her enjoy the small quantity of life that she would most likely live.

I prepared myself for the fact that she was not going to be with us very long by pretending I was her foster...and that worked for about the first five minutes... then I was hooked, yes I am one of those “forever foster” types. I also decided that I would fill her life with mega quality, give her the run of the house with no kitty rules, and love on her as much as possible. Then all of a sudden one week turned into one month, and on to one year, and that turned into two years...holy cow now we are up to three years. What amazes me with her is that she is more active then your typical cat and shows no signs of her condition at all...well...that is until you listen to her chest. There is plenty of Lub and absolutely no Dub, it almost reminds me of listening to the sound of a swirling ocean in a conch shell. Don’t get me wrong that is a beautiful sound unless it is rapidly coming from your cats chest. Another incredible thing is she weened herself off the Lasix, the only medication we had her on. It was a very abrupt weening as well, meaning one day about 5 months ago she refused to take the medication out of the dropper. At first I thought it was a game that she would run from me when I put the medication in the dropper, but one day I tried putting water in the dropper and gave it to her no problem. I figured that was her way of telling me she didn’t want it anymore. To our delight it did not have any ill effect, in fact her energy level increased.

Isis, has given us three Extraordinary years and has taught us so much about living life. She has been a “heart condition” cat her whole life and doesn’t know no anything different. She doesn’t sit around dwelling that she has something serious that could very well take her at any moment. She lives her days to the fullest, playing with our three dogs, shredding toilet-paper rolls, climbing on our lovebirds cage giving kisses to the birds, and carrying around her suede daisy Cat Companions filled with her favorite Daisy’s Blends essential oils (which happen to be Lavished in Lavender and Keep on Truckin). She truly has a zest for life....she is going to live it and live it good!

HAPPY 3rd BIRTHDAY ISIS, thanks for showing us that just because the deck is stacked against you doesn’t mean you can’t have a winning hand!

We cherish every day we have with you.

Daisy Paw choosen as one of the 5 top Lifestyle Products at VegFest 2011

Hey Friends check out what Denver Westword “Show & Tell” blog had to say about Daisy Paw when we attended VegFest 2011 this past weekend: Top 5 Lifestyle Products from VegFest 2011

Positive Association is essential when using Aromatherapy with Your Pets

An article our Founder wrote that will appear in the May/June issue of Dogs Naturally magazine:

Aromatherapy, a wonderful alternative and compliment to traditional medicine, uses essential oils of plants to enhance and stimulate psychological and physical well-being in pets and people. By inhaling these essential oil aromas, there is a hard-wired effect linked to our limbic system, which is the part of our brain responsible for mood, emotion, and memories. Thus, it is essential when introducing aromatherapy to our pets, that a positive environment is created so they will have the best possible memory associated with that aroma.

As humans, we can communicate verbally and explain to each other why we’d use a particular essential oil and the beneficial outcome expected. With pets, we need to create a positive association through our introduction to the aroma and our actions. We are responsible for their positive associations and when introducing anything new, we need to make their experience as pleasurable as possible.

Take for instance using aromatherapy to help alleviate the fear of thunderstorms. With a person, we can say “I would like you to use this aromatherapy every time you feel stress from the thunderstorm. As you breathe in the aroma, you will feel the calming effects of the oil”. Because you were told this information, your brain forms a positive association or memory to the essential oil; thus, allowing the calming effects to take hold. Due to our inability to communicate in the same manner with our animals, if you were to introduce essential oils during a thunderstorm to an animal, the association would be made referencing the scary thunderstorm, which would significantly reduce any receptiveness to the aroma.

As mentioned earlier, aromatherapy should be introduced in a positive environment. Take the oil, go to a quiet, happy place you and your animal enjoy and slowly introduce the oil while playing, having fun, and relaxing. Over time, they will associate this aroma with a positive experience; then, if you know there is a thunderstorm on its way, or something your animal perceives as a negative, you can use the oil as a means to help them relax in a given situation.

Aromatherapy with animals is not an overnight cure, but is a tool that when introduced over time can assist in a number of psychological and physical issues. As their sense of smell is much greater than humans, it is essential to go slow, use a little, and watch their reactions closely while introducing the aromas. A little bit of essential oils and a whole lot of positive memories can go a long way when using aromatherapy with animals.

By: Wendy England

Daisy & Wendy making positive memories any chance they can get.

The Power of Instinct & Natural Healing...a Lovebird's Story

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

For over seven years two un-handled lovebirds (just un-handled not un-loved), Pedro and Lilly, lived together harmoniously in my home until one day this past December when tragedy struck. It was early evening and we were heading out the door for an evening of fun. My daughter peered in our lovebirds cage and said “Mom, I think Lilly is stuck in their furry hut”. When I heard this, I thought there is no way she is stuck. The birds have been using this type of hut for over seven years with no incident. As I rushed to the cage, I saw her flailing about with her leg caught in a piece of fabric on the inside of the fur hut. It took my husband, daughter, and I approximately 10 agonizing minutes to free her from the hut. When the final string was cut, disaster struck and blood started pumping out of one of her front toes that she had injured during the struggle. We tried feverishly to stop the bleeding, but this coupled with being handle and separated from Pedro had Lilly’s adrenalin so high the bleeding continued. A trip to the emergency vet was definitely in order.

We placed Lilly back into the cage with Pedro and quickly drove to the nearest emergency vet office. By the time we reach the emergency office the bleeding stopped. It was such a relief and I was hopeful that the vet would be able to do something to fix her. Unfortunately, while speaking to the vet we received unsettling news that because Lilly was a un-handled bird anything they did to evaluate and save her life came with great risk of a fatal outcome (i.e.. Vet handling, antibiotics, anesthesia, etc...). We were also told that if we decided to take her home without treatment it would not be considered the wrong decision. This was all I needed to hear, because of my strong belief of treating health and well-being as naturally as possible. My instinct also told me this was the right thing to do so we headed home without treatment. Unknowingly, the three weeks to follow would have me questioning, testing, but ultimately awakening a deeper belief in the power of instinct and natural healing.

Once we arrived home with Lilly, all the chaos of the evening was quickly replaced with feelings of should have, could have, and what if. I realized that this was unhealthy for both of us in her recovery, but I just felt so helpless. I physically couldn’t do anything for her. I was not able to hold her like our other pets, touch her, or applying anything to the wound. To make matters worse she slowly removed her front toes day after day which would cause her to bleed out on a regular basis. The only thing I could do during this time was feed her, keep the cage scrupulously clean, and send loving, positive, and healing energy her way. My mantra during this time was “Helpless but Hopeful” and let me tell you I would have to repeat this over and over in my mind. Initially, I really questioned that there would be a good outcome and Lily’s daily self-destruction of her toes really tested my belief in instinct and natural healing. Although I questioned her ability to heal and my beliefs were tested, I remained hopeful that she would pull through.

One morning about three weeks after Lilly’s horrific accident, I was awakened to the sound of Lilly and Pedro singing. After the accident, Lilly stopped singing and would barely speak. To hear her belting out a tune with Pedro was priceless. Before I even got out of bed, I knew this was a positive sign. In the days to follow Lilly’s prognosis continued to improve. Once Lilly removed her two front toes, she stopped chewing on her foot. The wound healed with no signs of infection, and she quickly adapted to maneuvering around on one and a half feet. She will perch on one foot comfortably with the damaged foot tucked in her feathers. This amazing story of natural healing didn’t stop on the physical level either.....I believe that because Pedro and I provided her with so much positive and loving energy, she is in a happier emotionally then she was prior to this tragic event. Pedro has even taken it a step further for her and will now perch on one foot just like Lilly. I think it is his way of showing her how much he cares. If she has to perch on one foot, then he will too!

Being a part of Lilly’s incident has deepened my belief in the power of instinct and natural healing. It also reinforces my mission for Daisy Paw and that is to continue to only use organic and pure essential oils for our Daisy’s Blends that you place in our Collar Companions for aromatherapy. It brings me much joy to know that our company naturally helps pets and people feel better.

Wendy England, Owner, Daisy Paw

Lilly today... perching happily with Pedro!

The early bird catches the worm!!!

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

We have just launched our on-line store two days ahead of schedule. What a difference this has made for us, before Let’s Chill..., stress and anxiety would ensue the minute I put her harness on until the moment we got home. Now when we go for walks, I attach the Collar Companion about 30 minutes before we set out and by the time we leave the house she is in a much better frame of mind. With Let’s Chill, Daisy, her pack, and me are all much happier on walks. We went from just being an eCommerce to our products now being available in retail stores. That is not the only thing that has happened.....we have had a booth at many events in Colorado (Furry Scurry, Ella’s Walk, Boulder Creek Festival, just to name a few) and plan to expand into other states in the not to distant future. We even got some media coverage....9NEWS in Colorado did a “Starting Over” story about our company (you can watch the video from our home page). This is such an amazing journey and we are loving that our products are providing a natural alternative to calm, repel insects, and help make your dogs scent a bit more palatable. Stay tuned......more incredible products are just around the corner.

Exciting news!!! We now have eco-friendly and recycled Collar Companions.

As of today you can now order eco-friendly Tagua nut and recycled cotton & plastic Collar Companions. Hope you have a few minutes because this blog entry could take awhile.

Let’s see, where do I start......how about what products are new, and there is a whole slew of them. In regard to Collar Companions we have added over 24 pieces to our Hip Disc collection, just launched a seasonal line, and a couple weeks ago we came out with a “Helpin to save the Hoo Has” line with 10% of the proceeds going to breast cancer research. For our feline friends we came out with a “Cat Companion”. It is basically a Collar Companion without the strap, because cats process essential oils differently and they need the ability to move away from it when ready. Wait...we didn’t just stop at the felines....we also have a line for humans called “Collar Companions for Dog’s Best Friend” which offer a selection of 12 different Tagua nut necklaces to choose from and the capability to turn any Collar Companion for dogs into a bracelet for humans. Now both felines and humans can share in the wonderful aromatherapy of our Daisy’s Blends essential oils. Speaking of Daisy’s Blends, we have added two amazing blends to our repertoire. Although anyone can share in our four original blends with their pets, we have added a blend just for humans. It is a sassy amore blend for both men and women that is called “Hanky Panky”.....it is suitable yet spicy! Our other addition was created out of love for our seniors. It is a combination of Grapefruit, Carrot Seed, and Ginger to help keep them young at heart. The bottle is real easy to spot too because we call it “Keep on Truckin” which is what we intended to help them do.

On to the next topic.....Daisy Paw products are easier to get your hands on. Although you can still purchase items from our website we have expanded into retail store across Colorado and recently expanded nationally into places like Maryland, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. We are in some really amazing shops and are looking forward to being in many more.

Finally, our summer was packed full of amazing festivals and markets. We traveled across the front range of Colorado, in the Mountains, and just last week attend the HH Backer 44th Annual Pet Industry Christmas show in Chicago. We met so many incredible pets, pet owners, and retailers over the summer. It is very rewarding to see how well our products are received.

I think we have pretty much got you up to speed with what is going on at Daisy Paw to date. Moving forward, we will continue to create the best quality products we can. We are passionate about providing a natural alternative for pets and people to use while at the same time provide a unique and innovative piece that fits any style. We like to think of our Collar Companions as “Bling with a Purpose”!

Sponsor at 2 Million Dogs, Puppy Up! Fort Collins, CO.

Although the Colorado weather did not cooperate we still had an amazing time being a sponsor at the inaugural year of 2 Million Dogs, Puppy Up! Fort Collins.

If you are not aware of the story, in summary it is about a man, Luke Robinson, who lost his dog Malcom to cancer so he decided to embark on a walking journey from Austin, TX to Boston, MA. He walked 2000 miles with his other 2 dogs Murphy and Hudson to educate people about the disease. What he didn’t realize is his journey would turn into so much more.
